On September 27, CBC is introducing a new moderation tool that uses an algorithm to review comments submitted to CBC.ca. It’s called smart algorithmic automated moderation (SaaM for short) and is owned by Viafoura, the provider of our commenting platform.
This is a transition from a full human (manual) content moderation service to a hybrid – human and automated service.
For our community members, this means most comments will be moderated faster and moderation decision-making will be more consistent on a broader scale. We’ll still have human moderators to review the more nuanced and complex comments.
The algorithm has been programmed to moderate to CBC’s existing Content Submission Guidelines and it will learn over time as the human moderators review comments that get flagged by community members.
