We believe that your privacy is paramount.
We gather information so we can create products and programs that are meaningful and relevant to you. The email you use to register for a newsletter, the invisible footprint you leave when you read a story, the location preference you set in your app — these small nuggets of data help us understand what you like (and what you don’t like).
But we also recognize, as Canada’s public broadcaster, that we must be open about how we use this information and responsible in how we protect it.
- We do not collect information that personally identifies an individual, except when it’s provided voluntarily. For example, you might leave an email address if you’ve filed a request with our help desk. We keep this information confidential and don’t share it with third parties.
- We do use statistical analyses in order to measure interest and use of our online platforms. We use this data in aggregate form, which means it cannot be used to identify an individual.
- We gather data through “cookies”, small text files that identify and track a person’s computer browser upon entering a website. Read more about what we track in this explainer.
There may be some areas on our site where you wonder why we’re asking certain questions. If you register for one of our services, for example, we might ask your age and where you live. When you give us this data, you help us understand who is engaging with our content which helps us know what’s popular within different demographics. We can use this data to see where we’re succeeding and where we need to improve.
In the near future, we plan on selling some segmented information to third parties, such as sponsors or advertisers, that will allow us to match ads with your interests. For example, if you read several articles in a month about retirement planning, you’ll become part of a segment of readers who are shown RRSP ads. This information won’t identify you as an individual but as a profile whose preferences resemble others.
We won’t be selling the segments themselves to outside parties and the data stays within the walls of CBC. The money that we generate from our ad revenues can then be invested into creating content.

We only collect information for specific reasons and we retain that data for the purpose for which it was originally gathered.
