CBC’s funding model has always included both public funding and self-generated revenues. We rely on revenues generated through advertising to fund content creation, amongst other things.
Our decision to provide our audience with an ad-free option is a response to significant shifts in audience behaviour. Increasingly, Canadians are consuming content digitally and on multiple platforms, and there is a corresponding demand for access to ad-free content.
Offering ad-free programming online comes at a certain cost, which is offset by the optional subscription fee should you want an ad-free experience. Subscription fees not only allow us to maintain and update the full range of streaming services that we offer, but will help fund the creation of new Canadian content.
Please keep in mind that there is no obligation to sign-up. As always, you can watch on-demand CBC content and access our 14 regional TV live-streams at cbc.ca/watch. Should you choose to sign up for a premium subscription, you will gain access to CBC News Network and be able to enjoy our on-demand shows ad-free.
